How to Survive Social Distancing
Welcome to 2020 where COVID-19 is running rampant around the world and most countries have implemented policies to keep everyone as safe as possible. Social Distancing.
For some (AKA me), social distancing seems pretty normal because we do it every day. For others, not having social interaction is pure torture.
Practicing social distancing is a way to help #flattenthecurve and give hospitals a chance to everyone who comes in and not have to pick because they don’t have enough beds. Social Distancing is an introverts dream. You are told to stay inside unless it is an emergency which is how I live life anyway.
Here is an introverts guide to survive social distancing.

Netflix
How long have you been wanting to watch that new series on Netflix? Hulu? Now is your time! And Netflix even has “watch parties” so you can log on with your friends…at your respective housing of course! You are able to chat about the episode live with your friends. You can head over to Netflixparty to get started. If you are like me, your other option is to binge watch and/or rewatch a show all day long!
Cleaning
Hear me out on this one. Cleaning isn’t my favorite. With my two dogs I feel like I am constantly cleaning…constantly vacuuming and sweeping up hair…constantly mopping up muddy floors. Even if you take a break from your binge to straighten your room, wash clothes, organize your closet, dust, get the house ready for summer. When you are at home a lot, the mess or clutter might begin to bug you. Cleaning will help keep you sane and get rid of germs.
Arts and Crafts
I am not the most crafty person however, being at home makes me want to do more crafts. Painting (walls or canvas), drawing, sewing, and knitting. So many things to do! If you find your secret calling you can start selling things on etsy or give them as gifts to your friends. Remember to stay six feet away though because…social distancing.
Reading
This one is probably the most stereotypical introvert hobby. And I must admit, I do have a good collection of books. Reading and writing is a great way to keep your brain engaged and pass the time! You can check out some book recommendations here.
Virtual Hangouts
If you are looking for some social interaction, this is the vest choice for you. Facetime, google hangouts, zoom, facebook messenger, etc. All of these are great options to stay connected to friends and family especially if your town or state has implemented “shelter in-place” where you only go out to work or buy food.
House Updates
This goes along with the cleaning…but will most likely make a mess. Have you thought about painting a room? Or maybe you have been wanting time to renovate a bathroom or change out carpet for hardwood. NOW IS YOUR TIME! You now have weeks to be in your house with these projects staring you down. If you are like me you just have to will yourself off the couch to do it.
Home with Children
Now, my expertise is in Early Childhood. I have a whole section on my blog with my preschool posts. You children will benefit from anything; communication, play, games, sensory materials, etc. If your kiddo is being given homework to do online, get it done, but don’t structure their day out so all that they do is academics. I care more about the whole child than the academic part of the child. Elementary kiddos should spend no more than 2 hours on homework and high school kids should spend no more than 4 hours on homework. We need to take this time to let them be kids and have fun. They can get messy and life will go on.
Cooking
Have you always wanted to learn how to cook? This is your moment. And no, microwavable food is not cooking. I’m talking about mixing everything from scratch, adding seasoning and spices, sautéing, baking, and the list goes on and on.
Adjusting to being at your house all the time is challenging. Being stuck at home doesn’t have to be a burden! We can use this time to slow down like we have been asking and take time for ourself. Social distancing will be over before we know it and we will go back to “normal” full steam ahead.
Take this time to slow down. Enjoy your family moments. Play with you dog. Find a new hobby. Relax. Eat good food. Read a book. Binge that series. We will get through this.
